What’s Going on at the Cameo Shooting and Education Complex

Aerial Gunnery at Cameo

 
October 7, 2026: Experience aerial gunnery from a helicopter at Colorado’s Cameo Shooting and Education Complex on October 16 and 17 during Goons Night Out III. With the mountains as your backdrop, engage steel targets using a Sons of Liberty Gun Works AR, firing two 50-round magazines for a total of 100 rounds during your flight.
The experience is $425 per person and can be purchased separately- no Goons Night Out III event pass is required.

Free Hunter Sight-In Days

September 16, 2026: Cameo will be host the annual Free Hunter Sight-In Days agin on the following dates:

      • Saturday, October 10
      • Saturday, October 17
      • Saturday, October 31
      • Saturday, November 14

Bays 6-7 will be open for sight-in preparation for this year’s hunting seasons! FREE only for individuals with a upcoming big game rifle license. Day-pass required for all other shooting. 

You MUST check in at the range office and verify you have a big game hunting license for an upcoming rifle season. Each licence can only be used for one free sight-in day.

Goon’s Night Out is Returning to Cameo

September 29, 2026: Goon’s Night Out is coming back again this year. T.Rex Arms is presenting Goon’s Night Out by Fieldcraft Defense. In addition to all the training opportunities and night time activities there will also be an opportunity to engage ground targets from a moving helicopter.  Allied Response, Inc will be flying  shooters on Friday and Saturday 10/16 and 10/17.

T.REX ARMS presents Goon’s Night Out III is an incredibly unique shooting event set at the world class CAMEO Shooting Complex in Western Colorado.  For 2-days/2-nights we blend structured training courses, shooting competitions and the joy of a casual range day with friends.  Top tier instructors offer signature 1.5-hour training blocks throughout both days.  Between training blocks jump into a shooting competition pitting your pistol, carbine or 2-gun skills against other shooters forthousands $$$$ in prizes during the day, or in the dark.  Check our vendors booths and demo ranges to get hands on with the latest guns and gear from industry leaders.  Don’t forget to stop by the machine gun range to go full-auto, or rent a set of night vision to use at the event!  ***For an unforgettable thrill strap in for a helicopter gun run over the canyons at Cameo!***  Refreshments will be offered by local food trucks offering a variety of food and beverage options.  Don’t miss out on this amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience…

New Targets Added to the LRP

September 28, 2026:

The Varmint-ELR is a new course of fire consisting of nine 6″ diamond-shape targets (V1 – V9) starting at around 400 yards and out to a bit more than 800 yards designed for small bore cartridges.

Certificates for Master, Expert, and Marksman are available to those who can demonstrate successful engagement on the specified targets.

      • V3 (Marksman)
      • V6 (Expert)
      • V9 (Master)

Varmint-ELR targets can be engaged with cartridges larger than 6mm/24cal but bullet weight cannot exceed 175 grains to prevent target damage. Certificates are not awarded for cartridges larger than 6mm/24cal.

Ask the LRP RSO for a target map which shows target locations and contains rules for the course of fire and awarding of certificates.

LRP Visitor

August 1, 2026: Cameo is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including:

    • Blue whiptail lizards
    • Collared Lizards
    • Bighorn sheep
    • Mule deer
    • Mountain lions
    • Coyotes
    • Cottontails
    • Bald eagles
    • and at least one black bear

The bear came for a visit to the LRP shelter, and was caught by the security cameras the other day. (No one was around at the time).

Competitive Shooting at Cameo

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at competitive shooting? In addition to the state, regional, national and world-level events, Cameo hosts a number of local competitive shooting events run by the Action Pistol Group (APG), the Western Colorado Precision Shooters (WCPS), and Ultimate Hunter Shooting Sports (UHSS).

A list of the regular matches follows:

    • IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) – a pistol and PCC match held on the 1st Saturday of the month and sponsored by APG.
    • UHAC  (Ultimate Hunter Archery Competition) – a hunting-themed archery match held on the 2nd Saturday of the month and sponsored by UHSS.
    • UHRC (Ultimate Hunter Rifle Competition) – a hunting-themed centerfire rifle match held on the 2nd Saturday of the month and sponsored by UHSS.
    • PRO .22 – a rimfire rifle match held on the 2nd Sunday of the month and sponsored by WCPS.
    • USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) – a pistol and PCC match held on the 3rd Saturday of the month and sponsored by APG.
    • Steel Challenge – a centerfire and rimfire pistol and PCC match held on the 4th Saturday of the month and sponsored by APG.
    • UHRF (Ultimate Hunter Rimfire Competition) – a hunting-themed rimfire rifle match held on the 4th Sunday of the month and sponsored by UHSS.
    • PCSL  (Practical Competition Shooting League) – a two-gun match held on the 5th Saturday (of months with 5 Saturdays) and sponsored by APG.
    • NRA F-Class – a long-range centerfire rifle match held periodically throughout the year and sponsored by APG.
    • UHHC (Ultimate Hunter Handgun Competition) – a hunting-themed handgun match held periodically and sponsored by UHSS.
    • UHMC (Ultimate Hunter Muzzleloader Competition) – a hunting-themed muzzleloader match held periodically and sponsored by UHSS.

If you would like to try IDPA, USPSA, and Steel Challenge in a low pressure environment, APG holds regular Introduction to Competitive Shooting classes throughout the year. In these classes, students learn the rules and get to try sample USPSA, IDPA and Steel Challenge stages.

Check Out the Long Ranger Club Page

The LRP has been really hopping lately. A lot of shooters are getting hits on the 1,000 yard, 1 mile and 2,000 yard targets. A hit on one of these targets, witnessed by an RSO, will get you a certificate (suitable for framing), as well as a listing and your picture on this website.

October 23, 2022: It’s that time of year again, and the mountain bighorn sheep at Cameo are very much in evidence. If you are interested in seeing them, stop in at the office or talk to a volunteer, and they can tell you where the sheep were last seen. These pictures were taken on October 22.

Chronograph Service

Have a load for your rifle or pistol for which you want to know its actual velocity through your gun? CSEC is now offering a chronograph service. See the Chronograph Service page for more details.

Schedule the Use of the Long Range Precision Course on a Non-Public Day

Users wishing to use the LRP on days other than the scheduled public days may now do so. Scheduling must be done a week in advance to provide time to schedule a Range Safety Officer. Scheduling is subject to availability of range and Range Safety Officers.  Call the Range Office at (970) 464-1339 to schedule.

 Fired brass available for sale at CSEC office

CSEC has fired range brass in 10 pound bags available at the range office. The brass is available in a number of pistol and rifle calibers. See the Range Office page for details.
