What’s Going on at the Cameo Shooting and Education Complex

LRP Visitor
August 1, 2026: Cameo is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including:

- Blue whiptail lizards
- Collared Lizards
- Bighorn sheep
- Mule deer
- Mountain lions
- Coyotes
- Cottontails
- Bald eagles
- and at least one black bear
The bear came for a visit to the LRP shelter, and was caught by the security cameras the other day. (No one was around at the time).

UHSS Championship
August 1, 2026: The Ultimate Hunter Shooting Sports Championship match returns to Cameo this year on August 7th through the 9th. Sign up on Practiscore Here.
FieldCraft Defense is Holding Courses at Cameo
July 2, 2026: FieldCraft Defense is holding courses at Cameo over the next few months.

Cameo Classic Steel Challenge Match
June 7, 2026: This is going to be Cameo’s largest Steel Challenge match ever! The Jerry’s Outdoor Sports Cameo Classic Steel Challenge Match returns for the 3rd time to Cameo this year on August 22nd.
This year’s 10-stage Cameo Classic contains all 8 of the standard SCSA stages plus 2 of the 8 new provisional stages (to be voted on by the competitors).
There are a large number of sponsors providing some pretty significant prizes. Prizes will be awarded at the award ceremony during the cookout following the match.

Competitive Shooting at Cameo
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at competitive shooting? In addition to the state, regional, national and world-level events, Cameo hosts a number of local competitive shooting events run by the Action Pistol Group (APG), the Western Colorado Precision Shooters (WCPS), and Ultimate Hunter Shooting Sports (UHSS).
A list of the regular matches follows:

- IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) – a pistol and PCC match held on the 1st Saturday of the month and sponsored by APG.
- UHAC (Ultimate Hunter Archery Competition) – a hunting-themed archery match held on the 2nd Saturday of the month and sponsored by UHSS.
- UHRC (Ultimate Hunter Rifle Competition) – a hunting-themed centerfire rifle match held on the 2nd Saturday of the month and sponsored by UHSS.
- PRO .22 – a rimfire rifle match held on the 2nd Sunday of the month and sponsored by WCPS.
- USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) – a pistol and PCC match held on the 3rd Saturday of the month and sponsored by APG.
- Steel Challenge – a centerfire and rimfire pistol and PCC match held on the 4th Saturday of the month and sponsored by APG.
- UHRF (Ultimate Hunter Rimfire Competition) – a hunting-themed rimfire rifle match held on the 4th Sunday of the month and sponsored by UHSS.
- PCSL (Practical Competition Shooting League) – a two-gun match held on the 5th Saturday (of months with 5 Saturdays) and sponsored by APG.
- NRA F-Class – a long-range centerfire rifle match held periodically throughout the year and sponsored by APG.
- UHHC (Ultimate Hunter Handgun Competition) – a hunting-themed handgun match held periodically and sponsored by UHSS.
- UHMC (Ultimate Hunter Muzzleloader Competition) – a hunting-themed muzzleloader match held periodically and sponsored by UHSS.
If you would like to try IDPA, USPSA, and Steel Challenge in a low pressure environment, APG holds regular Introduction to Competitive Shooting classes throughout the year. In these classes, students learn the rules and get to try sample USPSA, IDPA and Steel Challenge stages.

Check Out the Long Ranger Club Page
The LRP has been really hopping lately. A lot of shooters are getting hits on the 1,000 yard, 1 mile and 2,000 yard targets. A hit on one of these targets, witnessed by an RSO, will get you a certificate (suitable for framing), as well as a listing and your picture on this website.

October 23, 2022: It’s that time of year again, and the mountain bighorn sheep at Cameo are very much in evidence. If you are interested in seeing them, stop in at the office or talk to a volunteer, and they can tell you where the sheep were last seen. These pictures were taken on October 22.

Chronograph Service
Have a load for your rifle or pistol for which you want to know its actual velocity through your gun? CSEC is now offering a chronograph service. See the Chronograph Service page for more details.
Schedule the Use of the Long Range Precision Course on a Non-Public Day
Users wishing to use the LRP on days other than the scheduled public days may now do so. Scheduling must be done a week in advance to provide time to schedule a Range Safety Officer. Scheduling is subject to availability of range and Range Safety Officers. Call the Range Office at (970) 464-1339 to schedule.
Fired brass available for sale at CSEC office
CSEC has fired range brass in 10 pound bags available at the range office. The brass is available in a number of pistol and rifle calibers. See the Range Office page for details.
